Responsible Use of AI in Aging Services

What is AI?

AI, or Artificial Intelligence, refers to the development and deployment of computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. AI encompasses a wide range of technologies and techniques that enable machines to perceive, reason, learn, and interact with their environment.

AI systems are designed to simulate and replicate human cognitive functions, such as problem-solving, pattern recognition, decision-making, and natural language understanding. These systems often rely on large amounts of data and algorithms to process and analyze information, enabling them to make predictions, identify patterns, and generate insights.

Two forms of AI

AI can be classified into two main categories: Narrow AI and General AI. Narrow AI, also known as Weak AI, is designed to perform specific tasks and is trained or programmed to excel in those areas. Examples of Narrow AI include voice assistants, recommendation systems, image recognition software, and autonomous vehicles. That Siri recommendation that your iPhone suggests about creating a routine to automatically order your nitro-pour cold brew on Friday morning as you drive to Starbucks? That is Narrow AI.

On the other hand, General AI, also known as Strong AI or Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), refers to AI systems that possess human-level intelligence and can perform any intellectual task that a human being can do. AGI systems would be capable of understanding, learning, and applying knowledge across various domains, adapting to new situations, and exhibiting common sense reasoning. General AI uses large language models; vast amounts of text data to understand and generate human-like language. These models are designed to process and comprehend natural language input, such as text or speech, and generate relevant and coherent responses. The ChatGPT platform that has been making recent news headlines is a modern form of General AI.

The current state of the technology has primarily been focused on Narrow AI applications. General AI, is rapidly evolving and will continue to change the way that we live and work.

The opportunity for Aging Services

In the process of making aging services more intelligent and efficient, AI has the potential to make our services more personable by enabling us to focus increased time and energy on personalized communication, enhanced creativity, fostering a sense of community, and addressing the unique care needs of individuals as they age.

AI should empower us to become better providers of aging services, professionals, and organizations. However, this transformation will not happen without a continuous focus on the responsible application of AI across all aspects of the aging services industry.

We believe that AI will have a transformational positive impact on the quality of care and the well-being of seniors. However, it may also reshape job roles, displace certain tasks, and necessitate ongoing discussions about maintaining privacy and security for older adults.

It is crucial for us to engage in thoughtful discussions and establish clear principles, policies, and procedures as AI capabilities advance to ensure that we harness the full potential of this transformative technology while safeguarding the dignity and autonomy of the aging population.

Cypress Living’s Responsible AI Principles:

  1. Responsible Design and Operation of AI Technologies: We are committed to the responsible design, development, deployment, and operation of AI technologies in all aspects of our work.
  2. Human-Centered Approach to AI: We advocate for a human-centered approach to AI, where professionals are empowered and augmented by AI technologies. AI should serve as an assistive tool rather than acting autonomously.
  3. Human Accountability in AI: We passionately believe that humans should retain accountabilities for all decisions and actions, even when supported by AI. Human presence and oversight must be maintained in all applications of AI.
  4. Valuing Human Knowledge and Creativity: We recognize the indispensable role of human knowledge, experience, emotion, and imagination in fostering creativity. We actively explore and promote emerging career paths and opportunities for creative professionals.
  5. Ethical Use of AI-Generated Content: We understand the potential of language, images, and videos to educate, influence, and drive change. We commit to never knowingly employ generative AI technology to deceive, create content solely for financial gain, or spread falsehoods, misinformation, disinformation, or propaganda.
  6. Acknowledging AI Limitations and Risks: We acknowledge the limitations and potential dangers of AI and take them into consideration in all our decisions and actions.
  7. Transparency in Data and AI Usage: We prioritize transparency in data collection and the use of AI to maintain the trust of our audiences and stakeholders. Openness about data practices and AI applications is essential to our commitment.
  8. Personalization with Privacy: We are strong advocates for personalization while respecting privacy. We strictly adhere to data privacy laws, mitigate privacy risks for consumers, and ensure that our moral compass guides us when legal precedents lag behind AI innovation.
  9. Intelligent Automation with Humanity: We believe in the power of intelligent automation without sacrificing human touch. AI has the potential to bring profound benefits to humanity and society while preserving our core values.
  10. Openness in AI Sharing: We embrace an open approach to sharing our AI research, knowledge, ideas, experiences, and processes. By fostering collaboration and sharing, we aim to advance the industry and contribute to the betterment of society.
  11. Upskilling and Reskilling for Fulfilling Careers: We prioritize the importance of upskilling and reskilling professionals, empowering them to build more fulfilling careers and lives with the support of AI. We see AI as a tool to enhance human potential.
  12. Partnerships Aligned with Principles: We believe in forging partnerships with organizations and individuals who share our principles. By collaborating with like-minded entities, we can work together towards common goals and make a positive impact in the world.

How We Use AI Today

As we continuously explore the potential of AI technologies to enhance efficiency and performance throughout our organization, our focus currently lies in leveraging generative AI for content creation purposes. Specifically, we may utilize generative AI to create content for various marketing platforms such as our website, blog, social media, or digital ads, as well as long-form content like articles. We may also use generative AI to create internal training materials or staff communications. Our technology and innovation team is perpetually looking for opportunities to leverage AI for robotic process automation to create efficiencies and improve processes.

By harnessing generative AI in these areas, we aim to optimize our content creation processes and deliver impactful materials to our audience.

We use a collection of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) products for:

  • Speech-to-text transcription
  • Content creation and summarization
  • Outline generation
  • Image generation
  • Copywriting
  • Ideation
